Journal Entry 3
Date: 17. 3. 2025
Activity:
- Watched a video about one-page design
- Created a one-page level design (Project A)
- Learned Affinity Designer to complete this project
Notes:
I liked the video, but I am not sure if this is the most efficient way to do things. I read somewhere that these nice designs can make other people hesitant to propose changes, and therefore "ugly" designs are better and faster in this way. But as a documentation, it works really well.
It would be nice if there was a link (maybe I didn’t notice it) to the designs shown in the video because the stream resolution is really low.
For my design, I started with a template. There, I made spaces for different topics for the level. Then, I iterated over them, improving them one by one.
First, I made the Legend, so I needed to go through the 2D Game Kit files to find what it had to offer. I also borrowed some iconography from the game Portal 2.
Then, I started the game to look at key values for the Player and Enemies. This was the next thing I worked on.
Lastly, I designed the level. With everything at hand, it was surprisingly not that long of a process. After that, I explained the idea behind it and also added dialogues as a form of a tutorial.
I initially wanted to use Canva for the design but found it not so great for this purpose. So, I took the opportunity and started learning Affinity Designer.
As mentioned in the last journal entry, I went on a uni ski trip. When I started working on this project, I underestimated the time required, so when the ski trip came, I did not have a version ready that I would like to present. That’s why I am uploading it now.
Invested hours:
- Watching the video: 1 h
- Making the document: 7 h
- Learning about Affinity Designer: 2 h
Outcome:
- One-page level design
- Basic usage of Affinity Designer
